BACON, BANKSY OR BASQUIAT?
NEW SERIES GIVES INSIDE TRACK ON ART AND WHERE TO FIND IT
IN LONDON & PARIS
08 January 2008: Discovering, enjoying and buying art has never
been more popular, but with so much choice and so many places to go, it
can be daunting to search out the artists you like and where to find them,
especially in a foreign city. Art in the City, a new series of
stylish guides, which launches with editions dedicated to London and Paris,
reveals each city's thriving art scene through the work of more than 100
key modern and contemporary artists. Author Tiddy Rowan gives readers
the inside track on who to look for, where to go and what to see through
artist profiles, a comprehensive directory with highlighted must-see galleries,
and maps. Entertaining, informative and fresh, the guides offer a new
way of exploring each city as well as the perfect way to discover new
artists and where to see them.
Working with expert consultants and the full support of the artists and
galleries, Tiddy Rowan has produced a series of unique guides. Painstakingly
researched and beautifully produced, they are unlike anything else currently
available, and will appeal to seasoned gallery-goers and newcomers to
the art world alike.
Each of the A-Z artist entries is illustrated by a piece of the artist's
work accompanied by biographical details, a description of their work
and details of where it can be seen in the city, be it in public or private
galleries, public spaces, art colleges or other venues. These can then
be cross-referenced with maps of each city, area by area, and also with
a directory giving addresses and contact details for each of the galleries
or venues. Over 300 different venues are included in each edition.
For the London edition, curator Chris Stephens of Tate Britain has provided
a foreword describing the London art scene. Among the featured artists
are: Tomma Abts; Barbara Hepworth; Gilbert & George; James Ireland;
Hew Locke; Mike Nelson; Martin Parr; Paula Rego; Mark Rothko; Yinka Shonibare
MBE; Mark Wallinger and Toby Ziegler. Featured gallery and art fair listings
include: White Cube, Frieze Art Fair; Hayward Gallery; Contemporary Arts
Society; Camden Arts Centre and Whitechapel.
Christine Macel, Curator at the Musee d'Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou has
provided the foreword for the Paris edition. Amongst the profiled artists
are: Sadaane Afif; Balthus; Jean-Michel Basquiat; Pierre Bismuth; Pierre
Bonnard; Daniel Buren; Henri Cartier-Bresson; Francois Curlet; Marcel
Duchamp; Nan Goldin; Pierre Huyghe; Alain Jacquet; Yves Klein; M/M; Francis
Picabia; Martial Raysse; Tatiana Trouvé and Jacques Villeglé.
Among the featured galleries and museums in Paris are: Centre Pompidou;
