Citizenship in Schools
Barclays New Futures has helped raise dramatically raise awareness of
Citizenship and its effective teaching in schools. This assistance has
not only been through the ten year £10m sponsorship its self, but
also through the production of citizenship materials and the partnering
with the DfES to launch citizenship into the national Curriculum.
Year-on-Year Citizenship information
Every year Kallaway, working with CSV and Barclays New Futures evaluator
Carolyn Skilling develops citizenship handouts for schools to help teach
elements of the subject. Examples include:
Environment
Healthy Living
World of Work
Opportunities for

Special Partners
The Barclays New Futures handouts are used by schools all over the UK
to bring citizenship to life and benefit from the hundreds of successful
projects carried out by schools across the country.
Partnering with the Department for Education and Skills to launch citizenship
The DfES came to Kallaway for help with launching citizenship into the
National Curriculum in 2002. Kallaway developed a partnership between
Barclays and the DfES that would enable schools across the UK to easily
access the citizenship experience generated through the sponsorship.
Kallaway developed Barclays branded teachers packs, providing comprehensive
information on citizenship, and helpful ideas on the teaching of the subject,
how to approach community groups and the experiences of schools involved
in the Barclays New Futures sponsorship.
Kallaway also organised a Barclays sponsored conference on 'Citizenship:
From the Classroom to the Boardroom', the event sought to bring both the
business and education sector together to discover how each could benefit
from closer working partnerships.
The activity enabled the DfES to position Citizenship as a vital element
of young people's education and to highlight the mutually beneficial role
business can play in supporting active citizenship across society. The
conference was attended by over 150 guests drawn from education and FTSE
100 companies. Speakers included Stephen Timms, Minister for CSR; Sir
Tom Shebbeare, the Chief Executive of The Prince's Trust and Dr. Mary
Harris, Head of National Grid Transco Foundation.
To support the launch of citizenship and the conference, Kallaway worked
with The Independent to produce two supplements on citizenship in education
both in the classroom and in the community.
