Barclays New Futures has enabled over 1,000 schools develop citizenship projects and help students develop skills for life and work. The examples below demonstrate the range of the issues addresed by Barclays New Futures projects.

  Batley High School for Boys,
West Yorkshire. Breaking down barriers between cultural groups
 
  Project aims
Raise awareness and break down barriers between cultural groups.
 
  Barclays Funding
BNF provided £20,000 to create the Batley Heritage Library, a multimedia resource available to people across Batley and the surrounding areas.
 
  Project description
The students at Batley wanted to trace the town's multi-cultural social history, and to raise awareness of the cultural and gender issues facing students and the wider community. The students used a variety of research methods to gather material for the library, which was then published in various formats including artwork, photography, audio and video. Since completion it has acted as a mobile reference source, travelling to schools and community centres in Batley and the local area.
 
  Project results
The Batley Heritage Library is a valuable local resource and continues to be used and updated by the community and the school. The projects' processes have been recorded to provide a model for others to follow in the future.
 

Glencryan Special School
North Lanarkshire:Helping students with special needs into work
 
  Project aims
To help students with special needs bridge the gap between school and work.
 
  Barclays Funding
BNF provided £10,000 to help convert a building used to house the project and to provide necessary materials.
 
  Project details
To develop the employability skills of special needs students, the school wanted to create a real working environment that would help build skills, confidence and at the same time provide a useful local service. A tearoom and laundry were built in a converted building in the school grounds where students were trained in service skills, helping them to increase their self-confidence, gain awards and achieve qualifications.
 
  Project results
Skills acquired by the students through this project has significantly improved their job prospects. The framework for training and the links to the community that the project has developed continue to be of benefit to students.
 

Mullion Comprehensive School
Cornwall: Discovering The Value Of Politics
 
  Project aims
Enabling students to discover and communicate the value of political literacy.
 
  Barclays funding
BNF provided £10,000 to enable students to carry out research into a variety of government bodies ranging from their local district council to the European Parliament.
 
  Project details
In order to inform their peers about the importance of the political process a group of students at Mullion School undertook detailed research into many aspects of political life, taking them to every political level and helping them gain an understanding of the decision making processes which effect their lives. After each trip the group reported back to over 500 students on their findings, demonstrating to their peers the possibilities of involvement in the political process and the benefits that engagement can bring.
 
  Project results
The students' findings were archived for future use, and the work undertaken by all those involved contributed to Keys Skills in ICT, Literacy and Numeracy and at the same time promoted active citizenship.
 

Canonbury Primary School
London: Promoting Nutrition And Healthy Living
 
  Project aims
To raise awareness of health and nutrition and promote healthy living.
 
  Barclays funding:
BNF provided £10,000 to enable young people to run a series of health related activities.
 
  Project details
Canonbury School set up a series of 'Health Weeks' designed to inform students about healthy living to empower them to make informed choices about their lifestyles and the food they eat. Each week a speaker was bought in to the school to talk about a variety of health topics, the students then debated the issues raised and recorded their findings. In conjunction with the talks a healthy tuck shop was set up and run by students, as the weekly debates progressed it's success grew in popularity.
 
  Project results
The project has empowered students to make informed choices about healthy eating. The knowledge they have acquired has filtered through to family members, friends and the local community. The healthy tuck shop is a successful legacy of the project.
 

Porth County Community School
Cardiff: Training Students To Become Counsellors
 
  Project aim
To set up a school based counselling service to provide students with the opportunity to discuss issues affecting them.
 
  Barclays funding
BNF provided £5,000 to train students in counselling skills.
 
  Project details
Students were trained as peer counsellors by a local agency enabling them to set up and run their own counselling service for fellow students and the local community. The training allowed them to tackle several issues affecting the local area including drugs, alcohol and teenage pregnancy. As well as individual counselling the students make regular presentations in assemblies and PSHE lessons about the issues raised.
 
  Project results
The counselling provides a valuable service and is helping to tackle issues of concern to young people
