Judging
and Application
Kallaway coordinates
and runs all elements
of the sponsorship
including media
relations. Community
Service Volunteers
(CSV) works with
the winning schools
to help put the
projects into practice.
Judging
Kallaway creates
a judging panel
every year to assess
the school applications
to Barclays New
Futures. The panel
includes Barclays
staff and well known
figures drawn from
education, the media,
and Government.
Examples include,
Libby Purves,
Blue Peter Presenters,
Trevor McDonald;
Sir Ron Dearing,
Chairman, School
Curriculum Assessment
Authority; Theresa
May MP and Huw
Edwards.
Entry into the
awards
Kallaway invites
schools from across
the country to take
part in Barclays
New Futures and
put forward innovative
projects for which
they are seeking
funding. These schools
include, independent,
special needs and
state. Detailed
application packs
are produced and
a dedicated helpline
provided. Schools
must clearly demonstrate
the community benefit,
skills and work
related benefit
to the pupils of
their project. A
media campaign supports
the call for entries.
Schools can apply
for one of three
funding awards
1. Individual
School Award £5,000:
One-year award for
a school and its
students working
with a community
partner.
2. Partnership
Award £10,000:
Two-year award for
schools working
in partnership with
other schools and
a community partner
3. Award for
Citizenship £20,000:
Two-year award to
realise and promote
an outstanding vision
in the field of
citizenship education
with national impact.
Approximately 300
schools put forward
projects each year
for one of the three
award categories.
Awards are made
on merit of the
project against
a set criteria.
There is no set
number of awards
per category and
this varies on year-by-year
basis, determined
for the number of
schools applying
for each award.
Approximately 80
awards are made
each year.
"We were
genuinely impressed
with all the finalists.
In our view Frankley
School had put together
the best case for
the award. They
have such enthusiasm
and energy and their
determination to
improve the local
environment is impressive.
I wish them luck!"
Huw Edwards,
Presenter, BBC News
"I was
really impressed
with the high standard
of applications
this year. Student
groups - with a
wide range of ages
and abilities are
approaching a number
of key issues in
an innovative and
creative way. I
can see the projects
having a lasting
impact on not only
the school but the
community as a whole."
