Barclays New Futures, National Education Sponsorship

Barclays New Futures UK’s largest citizenship programme created by Kallaway

Barclays New Futures, the UK’s largest citizenship programme, was developed to encourage young people to actively participate in their local communities. A ten-year campaign in consultation with the DCSF, OfSTED and Community Service Volunteers (CSV) the programme positioned Barclays as a leader in Citizenship education and a business in the heart of the community.

The project helped pupils lead activities in their communities ranging from anti-bullying and local radio to anti-smoking campaigns and support for the elderly.

During the ten-years over 800 schools received awards, 100,000 students were directly involved and over 500,000 people directly benefited from the scheme. Winning schools attended regional Barclays New Futures Conferences each year to network with celebrities, other winners and celebrate their activity. As the programme grew in success, the DCFS partnered with Barclays to use the scheme as a template for the teaching of Citizenship across the National Curriculum in schools throughout the UK.

Kallaway worked closely with the Guardian Media Group to create case studies, debate guides and resources for teachers and a comprehensive media relations programme to amplify Barclays’ role in the media, securing 3,769 articles around youth issues, citizenship and the vision behind of Barclays New Futures.

The sponsorship cemented Barclays commitment to young people and their communities, promoted the bank’s values and was awarded the Hollis Education Sponsorship Award. Barclays New Futures continues to be recognised as an influential CSR and youth engagement campaign.

“The sponsorship was so successful because Kallaway worked with Barclays to set the aims and objectives and then ensured these shaped and drove the programme accordingly.   This enabled the programme to grow and develop and allowed Barclays to become the acknowledged leader in education sponsorship”

Alice Wilcock, Head of Community Affairs, Barclays' Plc

“I have sat as a judge for Barclays New Futures and watched presentations from school children.  To get these sizeable grants schools must demonstrate extra-curricular schemes that make a difference both within the institution and the community – and there are some brilliant and innovative ones out there.”
