LEILA'S INTERNSHIP AT KALLAWAY

Communications student Leila swapped Boston University for Holland Park to join Kallaway for an eight-week internship programme. Here she shares her highlights...

My favourite day from the Internship
The Martin Parr exhibit press launch at the Guildhall Art Gallery – one of Kallaway’s clients – has to be one of my best intern experiences. The lead up to the event was so exciting and it was great to support our Arts Consultant, Anya Harrison. I joined the team on site, met Martin Parr himself and talked with some very inspiring journalists – the atmosphere was great and I felt proud to be part of the Kallaway team.

How I conquered first day nerves
On my first morning I felt an influx of nerves, especially having travelled from the US to London for my placement. The team however made me feel welcome upon arrival and I soon felt completely at home. I really appreciated being encouraged to ask questions. It enabled me to learn as much as possible and get a great understanding of agency life, which really suited my objectives as an aspiring professional in the field of communications. After having learnt so much at the end of my first day - including, and not least important, how to make the perfect cup of British tea - I left with a feeling of great achievement.

Reflecting on how much I've learned
I set myself a goal of working with everyone at Kallaway, which I accomplished! In doing so, I fostered excellent relationships with my co-workers; this gave me a strong place to grow and to share my ideas. Furthermore, I was able to provide assistance on myriad clients, which gave me a broad scope of the day-to-day workings of Kallaway as a whole.

When I go back to America, I will take with me skills that range from media research to press release writing and pitching over the phone. I could not have asked for a better company to work with whilst living in London. Although I am sad to leave, I know the knowledge I gained here will stay with me wherever I go.
