Launching
Citizenship
In September 2002,
the DfES formally
launched Citizenship
into the National
Curriculum. The DfES
worked with Kallaway
to communicate this
addition and the position
the role it might
play in the social
and educational development
of young people.
Kallaway recognised
how Citizenship would
require schools to
become more active
in the community and
open to business involvement.
Kallaway worked with
the DfES, business
and community groups
to communicate the
benefits of having
citizenship in the
curiculum.
Kallaway created partnerships
with learn.co.uk and
the Independent newspaper
to produce case studies
and editorial supplements
on employees
involvement in the
community and the
business benefits
this could deliver
through increased
staff morale and business
profile in the community.
Two supplements were
produced in the Independent,
the first in September
2002 focussed on citizenship
in education both
in the classroom and
in the community.
The second supplement
in February 2003 focussed
on corporate citizenship
and business involvement
in the community and
included editorial
from the Princes
Trust, National Grid
Transco Foundation,
Business in the Community
and Barclays exploring
the benefits businesses
can gain by encouraging
their employees to
volunteer within the
community.
The years activity
culminated in a high-profile
conference, devised
and managed by Kallaway,
at the British Library
in February 2003.
Entitled: Partners
in Citizenship: From
the Classroom to the
Boardroom, the
event sought to bring
both the business
and education sector
together to discover
how each could benefit
from closer working
partnerships.
The activity enabled
the DfES to position
citizenship as a vital
element of young peoples
education and to highlight
the mutually beneficial
role business can
play in supporting
active citizenship
across society. The
conference was attended
by over 150 guests
drawn from education
and FTSE 100 companies.
Speakers included
Stephen Timms, Minister
for CSR; Sir Tom Shebbeare,
the Chief Executive
of The Princes
Trust and Dr. Mary
Harris, Head of National
Grid Transco Foundation. |

"The
launch of citizenship
encompassed
as wide range
of organisations
including schools,
NGOs, government
departments,
business and
press. Kallaway
has succeeded
in communicating
effectively
and sympathetically
across all these
areas to deliver
a campaign that
is raising the
awareness of
citizenship."

Head of PSHE
and Citizenship
Team, Curriculum
Division. |
