
BBC Radio 3 Choir
of the Year 2005
BBC Radio 3 Choir
of the Year is the
largest amateur choral
singing competition
in the UK. It seeks
to find and recognise
the best amateur choirs
in the country.
Choirs across three
age groups Children,
Youth and Adult
compete for the
overall winning
accolade BBC Radio
3 Choir of the Year
and be recognised
as the best amateur
choir in the country.
The current competition
has finished for
this year. Over
5000 singers of
all ages - making
up over 134 choirs
- competed at 14
events around the
country. Almost
500 pieces of music
have been performed
equating to 24 hours
of solid singing.
At the Final on
20 February 2005,
six choirs performed
in front of a 1,500
capacity crowd at
The Lowry, Salford,
Greater Manchester.
The event was a
carnival of singing
and performance,
bringing together
the country's best
choirs to perform
for the top title
- BBC Radio 3 Choir
of the Year.
Developments for
the next BBC Radio
3 Choir of the Year
will be announced
later in 2005.
BBC Radio 3 And
Youth Music
This is the first
time BBC Radio 3 has
sponsored the competition,
although the BBC has
broadcast Choir of
the Year since its
creation in 1984.
Music charity, Youth
Music is supporting
the children's category.
Through this support,
Youth Music aims to
encourage a wide range
of young singers who
will go on to enjoy
singing for the rest
of their lives.
