The Choir Invisible, East Midlands

Subtitled The Gospel Choir of the East Midlands, the Choir Invisible has astonished this largely rural region by springing up out of nowhere as if overnight, bringing together, in six short months, over ninety non-auditioned singers aged 15 to 70. The choir specialises in the blues and jazz-inflected songs of the African-American tradition, alongside the heart songs of South African gospel, all sung in its broadest, most inclusive spiritual context. Performing a capella, the music is taught 'by ear' in the traditional way, with no use of written music.

The Choir rehearses weekly at Harlaxton College, on the A607 just outside Grantham, with members travelling from Nottingham, Leicester, Melton Mowbray, Retford, Newark, Lincoln, Boston and Peterborough.

The choir's name was shamelessly stolen from Monty Python's 'Dead Parrot' sketch ('He has passed through the gauzy veil and joined the Choir Invisible") - although this is an very unlikely-looking 'heavenly chorus', appearing on stage as a motley collection of savage, singing bikers.
