Huge congratulations to Chantage, winners, BBC Choir of the Year 2006 and congratulations to all the singers and choirs that took part; your enthusiasm, talent and drive make the competition the success it is! Choirs from across the UK took part reflecting the rich and diverse musical culture in communities from around the country.

Enter 2008
BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year returns in 2008 and we're calling choirs of all sizes and styles to enter. From Barbershop to beat box, musical theatre to world music - we want you to get involved and take part in a group singing competition like no other.

2006 snapshot
Over 5,000 singers making up 117 choirs entered the 2006 competition. Over 500 pieces of music have been performed equating to over 30 hours of solid singing. Seven regional audition weekends were held around the UK. The Category and Grand Final both took place at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff. According Hattie's pedometer she averaged 14 miles at every audition round - giving a whopping 126 miles walked (equivalent to almost five marathons)!

CHANTAGE WINS BBC RADIO 3 CHOIR OF THE YEAR 2006

Choir Beats 117 Others to Become Best Amateur Choir in the UK

Chantage, a 38 strong mixed voice choir from London, won BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year 2006 at the competition's Grand Final held at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, 10 December 2006. Chantage also won the audience vote - a new initiative for the competition.

The accolade - BBC Radio 3 Choir Year 2006 - crowns Chantage as the best amateur choir in the UK. The win also secures the choir a commission for a new choral work by a composer of the choir's choice, sponsored by BBC Radio 3.

The Grand Final was broadcast on BBC Radio 3's Performance on 3 on Monday 11 December, and will be televised on BBC Four on Saturday 16 December at 1900hrs. Listen again to the Grand Final here.
