MARY KING
Creative Director/Mezzo Soprano
Mary King is a distinguished interpreter of a wide variety
of music. She has made a particular feature of contemporary
repertoire and has appeared in many roles on the operatic
stage.
She has worked with many conductors and orchestras across
the world, especially Oliver Knussen and Simon Rattle,
and regularly performed works such as Pierrot Lunaire,
Where the Wild Things Are, Ligeti's Aventures
and Nouvelles Aventures and countless new works.
Her many operatic roles include Marcellina (Nozze diFigaro),
Baba the Turk (Rake's Progress), Cockerel (Cunning
Little Vixen) , Mrs Grose (Turn of the Screw)
,Meg Page (Falstaff), Mama/Zippie (Where the
Wild Things Are).
As vocal coach and creative director, Mary King was Artistic
Associate of English National Opera's Baylis Programme
from 2004-2006. She ran ENO's highly successful performance
skills course, 'The Knack' for eleven years and works
with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra's education programme.
Mary has recently been announced as Head of the Vocal
Studio at the South Bank Centre from Autumn 2006.
A highly experienced vocal coach and creative director,
Mary has quickly become a key galvanising figure in the
vocal world and is now increasingly widely known through
her growing work on television. She works regularly for
the Berlin Philharmonic's cutting edge education programme.
Mary King was one of the driving forces behind Channel
4's critically acclaimed and award winning 'OPERATUNITY',
a five week television series introducing opera to the
wider public. This was followed by MUSICALITY, also on
Channel 4, a five part series on Music Theatre and in
July last year she was the expert analyst at Cardiff Singer
of the World for BBC Television.
