BBC
Radio 3 Choir of the
Year 2005: Results
Over
5000 singers, making
up over 134 choirs,
entered BBC Radio
3 Choir of the year
2005. Over the year
long competition 14
events have been held
across the country
and almost 500 pieces
of music performed
equating to 24 hours
of solid singing.
The Final was held
on 20 February 2005
at The Lowry, Salford,
Greater Manchester.
Six choirs - two from
each of the Children's,
Youth and Adult categories
- sung for victory
in front of a 1,500
capacity crowd waving
banners and rooting
for their choir's
success.
Choirs competed to
become Category Winners.
From these three winners,
The BBC Radio 3 Choir
of the Year 2005,
was chosen.
The Lowry exploded
with whoops of delight,
cheering and clapping
as Roger Wright, Controller,
BBC Radio 3, announced
the results. Singers
and supporters leapt
to their feet hugging
each other and their
conductors as the
winning choir names
were read out.
BBC Radio 3 Choir

The Oriel Singers
won the adult category
and the title BBC

commission for a new
choral work sponsored
by BBC Radio 3 and
they go on to represent
the UK in the European
Broadcast Union's

"On behalf
of BBC Radio 3, I
wish to extend my
congratulations to
all the winners and
finalists on what
has been a competition
of the highest calibre.
I'm very proud of
BBC Radio 3's new
sponsorship of this
much-loved competition
that enables choirs
from the length and
breadth of the country
to come together and
showcase their talent.
With over 5000 singers
taking part in the
competition overall,
BBC Radio 3 Choir
of the Year is a wonderful
demonstration of the
continued popularity
and importance of
choral singing in
UK communities today."
Roger Wright,
Controller, BBC Radio
3
"We are
astounded and very
pleased to have won
such a great prize.
BBC Radio 3 Choir
of the Year is a massive
competition and requires
a much higher standard
and input than anything
else we do. To have
won is very special
and my thanks goes
out to the choir who
made it all possible."
Tim Morris, Conductor,
The Oriel Singers
"We are
overjoyed! This the
first time the choir
has entered the competition
and to have won our
category is simply
amazing. A lot of
things went wrong
in the rehearsal but
when it mattered most
the choir performed
wonderfully under
pressure and came
away with a fantastic
win, I am so proud
of the choir and what
we have achieved."
Lynda Barrett,
Conductor, Methodist
College Junior Choir
"This
is absolutely amazing,
we are ecstatic, overjoyed
and thrilled to have
won! Taking part in
the competition has
been a tremendous
experience for the
girls. This is music
making at the highest
level and see and
compete with such
brilliant choirs is
an excellent experience,
we have learned so
much and this win
tops it all!"
