Music Workshop For
Primary And Nursery
School Teachers
As part
of its sponsorship
of the Children's
category of the BBC
Radio 3 Choir of the
Year competition,
Youth Music held a
free music teaching
workshop for primary
and nursery school
teachers.
Over 40 teachers
took part in the
session which was
led by Sue Hollingworth,
Projects Director
of the Voices Foundation.
The Voices Foundation
is a registered
charity that supports
the development
of music education
in nursery and primary
schools and the
wider community,
with the aim of
enhancing the education
and personal development
of primary school
children through
singing.
The workshop addressed
fundamental areas
of music education:
- How to help
young children
find their voices
and pitch match.
Looking at ways
in which young
children learn
to sing in pitch.
Helping them explore
upper and lower
resonance.
- The importance
of phrase.
How do we help
children understand
the concept of
phrase and spin
their air through
the phrase.
- The three
comparatives.
Exploring faster/slower,
higher/lower and
louder/quieter
and learning games
and songs that
reinforce these
concepts.
- Teaching
pulse, tempo and
rhythm.
Aurally and in
a written form
- Teaching
pitch using a
vocal aural approach
Pictures from the
session can be seen
in the picture library.
