HENRY HUDSON &
STELLA VINE: The Beautiful and The Damned
A new Hiscox Art Project
1 Great St Helen's, London, EC3A 6HX
Exhibition Dates: 24 November 2005-
21 January 2006
Private View: 23 November 1800hrs
- 2000hrs
31 October 2005, London: Controversial
artists Henry Hudson and Stella Vine have
collaborated on a new art project, The
Beautiful and The Damned. They will
be unveiling never-before seen paintings
of well-known figures from public life,
including Kate Moss. The exhibition is the
latest in a series of Hiscox Art Projects,
supporting contemporary emerging artists.
For this project, Hudson and Vine have come
together to explore images and stories from
tabloid newspapers. Taking as their starting
point F Scott Fitzgerald's novel of Jazz
Age decadence, the artists draw parallels
to our celebrity saturated culture where
reputations are made and lost overnight.
Henry Hudson
For this exhibition, Hudson uses mixed media
including painting, drawing and collage
to refer to current news stories covering
subjects as diverse as bird flu and the
royal family, playing with time frames and
historical references. His work is grounded
in a sense of theatre, the absurd and the
satirical, alluding to artists as diverse
as Hogarth and Paul McCarthy.
Henry Hudson graduated from Central St
Martins in 2005. He has a forthcoming exhibition
at a new gallery, 1 Ada Street, London.

Stella
Vine's controversial paintings of familiar
images from tabloid newspapers are a
reflection of her personal fascination
with popular culture and a response
to some of the more tragic aspects of
the lives highlighted by the media.
Vine will exhibit new paintings of Kate
Moss, this time likening the supermodel
to Shakespeare's tragic heroine Ophelia.
Using heavy impasto paint and bright
colours, Vine's exuberant paintings
are challenging yet compassionate. |
Stella Vine's previous exhibitions include
Transition Gallery, The Saatchi Gallery,
the Prague Biennial, Hamiltons Gallery and
Roberts & Tilton in Los Angeles. Her
work is in the collection of Charles Saatchi.
Elliot McDonald is curator of Hiscox Art
Projects.
