Old Vic
Bristol Old Vic produces award-winning
and critically acclaimed classics, new works,
a wide range of shows for families, as well
as experimental work in its studio theatre.
Linbury Biennial finalists working with
artistic director Simon Reade and Bristol
Old Vic will be designing for a new production
- Not the End of the World - adapted
by Simon Reade from the novel by Geraldine
McCaughrean, winner of the Whitbread Children's
Book Award in 2004. It will be staged in
autumn 2006 and tells the story of Noah's
Ark from the point of the women, children
and animals on board and addresses questions
of how we co-exist with those who might
share our humanity but not beliefs.
Bristol Old Vic is housed within a Georgian
theatre that dates from 1766, presenting
a unique set of challenges for the Linbury
finalists as they approach designing for
the production. Bristol Old Vic also has
an experienced in-house team of carpenters,
metal workers, scenic painters, prop-makers
and wardrobe - all of whom will be working
alongside the Linbury finalists.
Simon Reade, Artistic Director, Bristol
Old Vic said: "Bristol
Old Vic enjoys retelling mythic stories
in arresting new ways. The combination of
our historic playhouse and bold contemporary
designs onstage excites our audiences. The
Linbury Prize offers a fabulous opportunity
to work with the new generation of 21st
century designers - and for the theatre
to pass on its experience for the future."
