Ruth Hinkel-Pevzner's new solo exhibition, The Car will open at the disused Nicholls and Clarke Building on Shoreditch High Street on 1 May 2008.

Using visual material sourced from the Russian State Film Archives, Hinkel-Pevzner presents a five-screen film installation that will inhabit the ground floor of the empty Nicholls and Clark Building. It will be shown across five centrally hung screens, inviting the viewer to move through space and experience the intricate layers of narrative and film. Hovering somewhere in between prose and poetry, past and future, it presents us with a perceptive study of memory and longing.

In The Car, the pursuit through the city acts as a metaphor for the quest for an ideal and its possible repercussions. The artist's distinct voiceovers are used to recall an emotional journey, which is offset by the physical journey of the car within the film. This personal and particular experience is used to express something that is universal to us all. Hinkel-Pevzner's search for the universal stems from her own experience of living in several different countries throughout her life.

A series of photogravure prints will be shown alongside the film. These use excerpts from the film to delineate a specific moment from the moving image and employ a rare traditional printing technique to capture the film's atmosphere. Mirroring the multi-screen installation of the film, the prints will be exhibited as a set of five. The limited edition prints have been produced in collaboration with Atelier Hélio'g, a photogravurist based in Paris, France.

Hinkel-Pevzner's earlier work drew upon her personal archive, an extensive collection of home movies and personal memorabilia. In recent years she has begun to work with film archives, such as the Russian State Documentary Film and Photo Archive, the source of visuals for The Car. These were found while researching an upcoming project, Coalescence, which will include material from the BFI National Archives in the UK and the Library of Congress in the United States.

The Car is generously supported by the City of London and the National Lottery through Arts Council England, and co-produced with Measure. It is sponsored by Nicholls and Clarke, Hackenbacker Audio Post-Production and Baltika beer.
