National Centre for Circus Arts

The National Centre for Circus Arts is a global centre of excellence, training contemporary circus performers to degree level and beyond. The organisation wanted to take circus into the mainstream, and, crucially, ensure it was included in the new Theatre Tax Relief part of the Finance Act, alongside theatre and dance. We embraced the spectacle of circus, from aerial acrobatic photo calls to hand-delivering 70 sets of juggling balls to TV and radio presenters so they could share their skills on air. And we got serious, building relationships with decision-makers and opinion-formers across government, the arts, education and the media. We underlined the value of circus to the UK’s creative economy, and validated it as a career choice. Media outreach resulted in 140 stories (90 UK, 50 international), 94% of which included core messaging. As the result of our campaign, circus was also included in the Theatre Tax Relief Act, putting it on a par with theatre and dance.
